Hawthorne Safeway Closed for Reconstruction

This month, the Safeway at 2800 SE Hawthorne has closed for reconstruction. As a neighborhood, we want to do our best to keep people update on what’s happening with the project. If you have questions, please feel free to contact our Land Use chair Joanne Stainbrook: joanne@handpdx.org.

In the meantime, here are a few updates from what HAND knows about the project:
There was some concern that original plans for the new story that Safeway had submitted limited exiting off the property. The latest update we have is that Safeway will allow customers to chose whether to exit onto Hawthorne or 29th (in addition to 27th). This will maintain the same choices customers have right now.

Some have asked about stop signs on SE 29th & Clay. This issue is up to the city and neighbors to shepherd if they think they are needed.

Construction on the new store won’t start right away. Safeway says they will be cleaning out the store and moving out equipment probably for the rest of April. A Safeway representative should be getting a construction schedule from the contractor the first week of May and said she would share that with us.

The contractor job trailers will be parked toward the 29th side of the lot and that parking area will be the last area to get worked on. Safeway will direct the contractor not park on Clay Street and to minimize disruptions to the neighborhood. There will be a construction manager from Safeway managing the project. His contact information has been provided to HAND and immediate neighbors in the event that we need to contact him.

For the GNA (Good Neighbor Agreement) and no tresspass agreements we have until the building opens to get those ironed out. The GNA has to go through personnel and the no trespass will be assigned to a Safeway security person.

Once we have a construction schedule, we’ll have a better idea of when the store is scheduled to reopen.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, or would like to get involved with helping track this project please contact HAND’s Land Use Chair Joanne Stainbrook: joanne@handpdx.org.
