Division/Clinton Street Fair is Coming Soon!

The Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood Development Association (HAND) is in the midst of helping plan the Division/Clinton Street Fair scheduled for Saturday, July 24, 2010.

For the first time, this 18th Annual Street Fair is sponsored jointly by the Division/Clinton Business Association and our neighborhood association, HAND.

Hours of the event are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will span Division and Clinton streets from 12th-60th Ave. The day kicks off with a parade at 11 a.m. that will travel down Division from 50th to 20th and up Clinton to 26th.

HAND organizers are helping coordinate local entertainment and a stage for the “Seven Corners” portion of the neighborhood. Our neighborhood received a grant from Southeast Uplift to host this portion of the street fair, called “Roots of Our Neighborhood” that will have a focus on history and agriculture in our neighborhood over the last 100 years. We are currently looking for vendors, entertainment, local artists and others who would like to participate in this portion of the fair. Contact Amy Lewin (see below) for details!

The success of the street fair and this event is dependent upon its volunteers!

Commercial Burglary Alert in Inner SE

The following information was sent out by our neighborhood’s crime prevention coordinator to local business associations. It’s a good reminder for everyone to be aware of their surroundings.

The recent “hot spot” on the east side of the river for commercial burglaries is in inner-Southeast and does include a portion of lower DCBA (Division/Clinton Business Association). It’s very important for all business owners to be aware of any suspicious activity around your business as well as your neighbors and to contact non-emergency right away if you see something that just doesn’t look right. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you are interested in a CPTED at your business. -From Havilah Ferschweiler, Southeast Crime Prevention Coordinator, Office of Neighborhood Involvement, City of Portland.

Join the Sierra Club’s Oregon Chapter for a block party

Saturday, July 10
Sierra Club’s Oregon Chapter Offices
1821 SE Ankeny (in the Buckman neighborhood)

This is their second annual “Sierra Club Shindig.” Last year they restyled the event in a way that embraces the Sierra Club’s volunteer and activist culture. “Instead of a costly, formal annual dinner, we now throw what is essentially a neighborhood block party and BBQ at our office in Portland. We’ve found this model to be much more accessible to our members, affords us a better opportunity to educate the public about our work in Oregon, and it has proven to be a fun and successful volunteer appreciation and fundraising event,” says organizer Russ Rotondi.
