Background on Evergreen Curling Club:
Curling (usually associated with Canada, the country that dominates international competition) has been an up-and-coming sport on this side of the border since it was reinstated as an Olympic sport at Calgary’s Winter Games in 1988. The U.S. Men’s Curling Team took the bronze at the 2006 Torino Winter Games.
The game is played by two teams of four people each. Players take turns pushing 42-pound granite stones towards a target at the opposite end of specially-prepped sheet of ice. One of the more distinct images of the sport, vigorously sweeping the ice in front of the path of a moving stone, maintains the momentum of the stone, making it travel straighter for a longer distance. The team closest to the target scores points for that “end”; the team that scores the most points wins.
Evergreen Curling Club was founded in 2002 (I joined in 2004). For most of that time, we have curled at the Lloyd Center Mall. The Lloyd Center has been a great place for us to demonstrate the sport to passersby, but we have been limited in our ability to grow the club by the need to share ice with other sports and activities. We expect that a curling-only facility will not only help us to increase membership, offer more leagues, and host weekend tournaments, but will also make Evergreen the premier club in the United States Curling Association’s Mountain Pacific (MoPac) Region. As MoPac’s first dedicated curling facility, Portland would become a natural host for MoPac’s annual playdowns, which determine the region’s entrants into the national championships (and the members of the U.S. Olympic curling teams).
