In the City of Big Shoulders rests a garden on five acres at the southeast corner of Millennium Park, The Lurie Garden is a four-season marriage of spatial structure, American native perennials and lighting design. Designed by landscape architects Gustafson Guthrie Nichols Ltd., Seattle, WA, with conceptual lighting design by Robert Israel, Los Angeles, and perennial planting design by world-renowned planting designer Piet Oudolf, The Netherlands, The Lurie Garden offers visitors a rich and total sensory experience.
Colleen Lockovitch’s horticultural background includes time spent on the east coast as Curator of Horticulture for a historic estate in Delaware following a fellowship through the Institute of Horticulture for the United Kingdom and the Garden Club of America. While in the UK, she worked for The National Trust, The University of Oxford Botanic Garden,Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. In 2003,Lockovitch became senior horticulturist at the Chicago Botanic Gardenbefore accepting a position at The Lurie Garden in 2005. Millennium Park opened in July 2004 and is located in the heart of downtown Chicago and is an award-winning center for art, music, architecture and landscape design. The result of a unique partnership between the City of Chicago and the philanthropic community, the 24.5-acre park features the work of world-renowned architects, planners, artists and designers. It is also one of the world’s largest extensive green roofs built over parking garages, a bus and train depot. It also features a commuter cycling station with a several year waiting list for residents.
