Letter was resent January 9, 2024

Dear Mayor and Commissioners,

Please see the attached letter from the Hosford Abernethy Neighborhood District (HAND) regarding the Housing Regulatory Relief proposal currently in front of the Planning Commission.  We believe any short-term benefits from the proposal would be far outweighed by long-term harms to a number of Portland’s important policy and environmental goals.  Many of the rollbacks are billed as temporary, but the buildings built to the lower standards will be permanent.

The proposal has been very rushed, and Portlanders have not had sufficient opportunity to fully digest and understand the large number of rollbacks to policies that many of us have worked hard to implement.

There are more effective ways to make it easier to build without undermining the policies that help make Portland a more  livable and sustainable city.

If and when the Housing Regulatory Relief proposal comes before you, we urge you not to support it, and to find a better way to increase housing in Portland.

Thank you,

Chris Eykamp
HAND Chair
